When we stand on Sunday morning to give a sermon we are communicating to a mixture of post-modern, post-protestant, post-Catholic, post-Secular, post-everything culture. We are essentially post-everything. And it is in the cities and the suburbs.
In our North American culture, a “Christian narrative” no longer exists. The Story is lost to our current generation. What is left of any semblance of Christianity is negative. Consider the following presuppositions of the post-everything world:
When you approach sermon planning for your context, it’s important to (1) begin with your own heart, (2) know your preaching style, (3) focus on Gospel-centered preaching.
1. Beginning with your own heart means you need the brokenness of a wrong spirit. You are worse off than you ever dared to let anyone know — even yourself.
But you also must be seeking the renewal of a right spirit, finding the ministry of the Holy Spirit, and enjoying the freedom of a liberated spirit.
2. Choosing a preaching style is important. All leaders have a style. Typically that pastor/leader also communicates or preaches in that style. We are usually strong in one and have a secondary style. The strong style is the one we default to when we preach. Do you know “who” you are in your communication style? Are you aware of what style you have? Are you more of a prophet, king, or priest?
3. Gospel-centered preaching believes that Jesus Christ can change any person or institution through the power of his gospel. Gospel preachers let the gospel do its work. “I am not ashamed of the gospel because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes” (Romans 1:6).
As people hear you preach, they ask: “Does this have anything to do with me? Is it pertinent to my situation, my family, and my work? Will there be something for me to take away from this?

CMM’s mission of empowering leaders to multiply has happened in Cuba. This past week, Jim Moon, Associate Director at CMM, and a small team were in Camaguey, Cuba where our certified Cuban Gospel Coach Trainers led their first basic training event. We have the first generation of Cuban trainers!
About three years ago we were invited into Cuba to help train leaders in the Los Pinos Nuevos Church movement. Over the following 18 months, Jim Moon and a select few of certified bi-lingual trainers from the US trained about 150 plus leaders. But it was not going to scale in reaching 8,000 leaders, so we switched strategies to focus on training Cuban leaders to become Gospel Coach trainers.
I am so grateful to Jim and other Gospel Coach trainers who have partnered with CMM these past years to bring this level of training to the men and women in Los Pinos Nuevos churches. Thanks to Charlie, Gary, Omar and David for your work in empowering those leaders to multiply the gospel! And thanks too, to those of you who contributed financially and prayerfully to make this a reality. Glory to God.
Many people have said — and I fully agree with the reality — that it’s very possible to plant a church and not make disciples of Jesus Christ. Many churches have been started as (primarily) a Sunday morning event and success is measured by how many people attend weekend services. However, if you commit yourself to making disciples, you will plant and grow a church.
I suspect that much of your disciple-making approach is being done by either (1) exactly following the method by which you were discipled (or by reaction against how you were discipled) or (2) you have no disciple-making intentionality whatsoever because you were not discipled by anyone in your past.
Let’s assume you need to begin or continue the work of creating a discipleship process for your new church. The expected course of action for an expert on discipleship would be to tell you what to do and you’d take some notes, ask some questions, and forget about it on the way home. Or maybe you’d talk through some of this with another leader in your church, a friend in ministry, or a coach who’s helping you start your new church.
Jesus calls specific people with specific abilities, affinities, and aptitudes for specific ministry contexts. Let’s begin moving forward with the discipleship plan your church plant will implement.
A Different Path to Develop a Process of Discipleship
The purpose and plan of discipleship in many churches is unclear, unfocused, and unreliable. Programming will change constantly and the themes we emphasize vary wildly. It leaves people confused or exhausted, and leadership flabbergasted. What we propose is not complicated, but it does require the hard work of clarity, discipline, and consistency.
But first, let’s go back to basics and re-imagine discipleship by asking three simple questions adapted from the book, Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action by Simon Sinek. The questions are WHY, HOW, and WHAT.
