Most Church Planters sense the call of God to preach. One of the reasons you probably went into the church planting business was so you could preach the gospel to others. You sense you are a good communicator, passionate about preaching, and confident that you can get others to hear you preach.
Preaching the gospel is a top priority for the church. Preaching the gospel, according to the Scriptures is the chief means (the way God employs to get grace to work in us) of grace in us. Gospel-centered preaching believes that Jesus Christ can change any person or institution through the power of his gospel. Gospel preachers let the gospel do its work.
The Gospel Coalition’s resources website for preaching lists very different approaches to preaching the gospel, but don’t get confused by it all. If you are new to preaching on a regular basis, it will take you awhile to find not only your style, but also your model. Remember, whatever model you follow it will answer how you believe God changes people.
7 Models for Gospel-Centered Preaching:
1. Grammatical-historical Exposition
2. Repentance and Faith
3. Christ’s Work is the Solution
4. Christ is Present in the Text
5. The Gospel Dance
6. Radical Free Grace
7. Bad News/Good News
All of the above mentioned models are antithetical to the moral based religious preaching that pervades the North American Protestant Church. Most of the moralistic models follow this line of thinking:
1. Here is what God says in the Bible that you must do.
2. Here are the steps of how you are to do what God has said in the Bible you are to do.
3. Now, go and work those steps and God will help you—and if you fail, he will forgive you.
Examine your own sermons and check yourself. What is the basic message you preach as to how people are transformed? Is it by the finished work of Jesus Christ, through his life, death, and resurrection or is it by our obedience and efforts to “live for Jesus” once we have believed?
